Modonize: About
How to use this site

Initial registration and the rights it grants you

Before registering please take a brief moment to review the Terms and Conditions for membership and use of the site. You may register as a participating member of modonize by completing the registration form available from the registration link in the top right hand corner of the web page. Registration will automatically endow you with authorship status and will enable the 'Add' item links in each section of the site that allows user contributed content and will also allow you to add comments to contributions by other users. Editing capabilities are limited to content that you have contributed.

As part of the registration process a user directory will be created for you which will be used to store any documents/images that you upload as part of any contributions you add to the site. Upload and file management access to this directory is limited to your account, no one else is able to browse it's content. Initially user directories have a limit of 100Mb, if this subsequently proves to be too small, I will increase the limit. I would ask that this facility be treated in the spirit in which it is provided and that you restrict it's use to items that you upload in support of any content you add to the site. Please do not use it as a general storage facility or link to items stored there from other web sites.

Content Listing Pages

With the exception of the home page, the root page for each section of the site contains a list of all submitted content for that particular section. Important controls for navigating/sorting the lists etc are as follows:

1.    Login/Logout and User Profile links.

2.    Add a content item. The exact text displayed will change depending upon which section of the site you are currently browsing. Clicking this link will open the Add content page for that particular section. See the How to use editor page for an explanation of adding content using the on-line editor.

3.    Edit this item link. This icon will only be displayed if you are the original author for this particular item of content. Clicking the link will take you to the edit content page. See the How to use editor page for an explanation of adding content using the on-line editor.

4.    Clicking the 'Read More' link will display the full content for each item in the list display.

5.    All content on the site is categorised by topic. Clicking on this link will take you to a list display of all content that belongs to that particular topic. The listing will contain a mixture of content items from all sections of the site.

6.    Content lists can be sorted by date, title, popularity, topic, author and rating. They can also be displayed in either ascending or descending order.

7.    Ratings. All content may be rated by registered members of the site. Both the average rating and your individual rating for a particular item will be displayed in the list display. If you have not personally rated a particular item, only the average rating score will be displayed here. Depending upon the content type, the rating selection control will either be displayed along with the average rating in the list display (e.g the Links section) or in the item view for that section (e.g Articles section).

Content Item View Pages

Below the display for each content item you will find another set of controls as follows:

1.    Edit itemlink. This link will only appear if you are the original author of this particular item of content

2.    Add your comment link. This will allow any registered member to annotate/add a comment to the content item. I felt this would be a better system than the standard Wiki way of allowing anyone to edit the content itself and I would encourage the authors of content items to periodically review the comments and ammend their contribution if it seems necessary.

3.    Comments display. Comments are displayed below the body of the main content.

4.    Comments can be displayed in a number of ways according to personal taste and ordered by date. The best way to get a feel for this is to play with the selections available. There are some test comments below this article to play with.

5.    Reply to a particular comment rather than the content item itself.

Searching the site

The search box in the menu bar at the top of the page will, in the first instance, search the section you are currently in. On the search results page there is a check box that will expand the search across all sections of the site.
